Upket Browser ("the app") is a web browser for Android phones and Android TV, published by Hien Nguyen ("we"). This policy explains what information the app handles and how.

Summary

  • We do not collect, store or sell any personal data on our servers. The app has no account, no ads and no analytics.
  • Your browsing history, bookmarks, open tabs, settings, per-site preferences and site permissions are stored only on your device.
  • The app blocks ads and trackers on websites by default. You can turn this off at any time (see Ad blocking below).
  • Websites you visit may collect data under their own privacy policies.

Data stored on your device

Browsing history, bookmarks, open tabsShow history and bookmarks, restore tabsSettings → Clear browsing data (history), or remove bookmarks and close tabs individually

Private tabs use a separate storage profile. Their cookies and site data are deleted when the last private tab is closed, they do not save history, and per-site choices made in them are kept in memory only until the private session ends. App data is excluded from Android cloud backup. Uninstalling the app deletes all of it.

Device permissions

The app asks for these permissions only to provide browser features. Camera, microphone and location are requested only when a website asks for them, and you decide per website.

  • Internet – load web pages, filter lists and the ad blocker's scriptlet library.
  • Camera / Microphone – let websites you allow use them (for example video calls). Audio and video go directly to that website; we never receive them. Voice search does not use this permission (see Voice search below).
  • Location – let websites you allow know your location (for example maps). Location is only read while you use the app and goes only to that website.
  • Notifications and foreground service – show download progress, and keep sound from a page playing in the background on phones and tablets with a Play/Pause notification. Background playback can be turned off in Settings. The lock screen shows only "Upket Browser", and pages in private tabs are never shown.
  • Network state – check whether your device is online, so the app can show the right error page when a page cannot load. Error pages are built into the app; no request is sent for them.
  • Install unknown apps – open an Android app file (.apk) that you downloaded yourself, when you tap it. Android asks you to confirm.

Ad blocking

Ad and tracker blocking is on by default. It runs on your device: the app compiles the filter lists and blocks matching requests and page elements locally. You can switch it off, pick which lists to use, add your own list addresses, and allow ads on individual sites in the app.

  • Filter lists are downloaded from the following hosts, at most about once a day (the app sends a conditional request, so an unchanged list is not downloaded again):
    • easylist.to – EasyList and EasyPrivacy, by their authors
    • raw.githubusercontent.com – the Upket Vietnamese list
    • ublockorigin.github.io – uBlock Origin filters and quick fixes
    • Any https:// list address you add yourself
  • Scriptlet library – the app downloads uBlock Origin's scriptlet library once per app version, from cdn.jsdelivr.net, and converts it on your device. It is not bundled in the app.

These requests contain no personal data beyond what any web request contains, such as your IP address and the app's user agent. Upket Browser uses filter lists and scriptlets from the uBlock Origin project; this does not mean the uBlock Origin project endorses the app.

Network connections made by the app

Besides the websites you visit and the ad blocking downloads above:

  • Search engine – what you type in the address bar is sent to the search engine you selected (Google, DuckDuckGo or Bing) when you search.
  • Android System WebView – the web engine that shows pages is provided by Android. It may use Google Safe Browsing to warn you about harmful sites, as described in Google's privacy policy. The app does not turn this feature off.
  • Downloads – when you download a file, the app sends the cookies of that website to the same website only, so you stay signed in. Cookies are never sent to other hosts.
  • Voice search – when you tap the microphone in the address bar, the app opens your device's speech recognizer, an app provided by your device and governed by its own privacy policy. The app only receives the recognized text, which it handles like text you typed. The app does not record audio itself.
  • Sign-in dialogs – a user name and password you type when a site asks for them (for example a router page) go only to that site. The app does not save them.
  • Share – when you choose Share, the page's address is passed to the app you pick.
  • Bookmark icons – to show a bookmarked site's icon on the home page, the app asks that site once for its icon, without cookies, and keeps the icon on your device. Nothing is asked while browsing privately.
  • Search suggestions – while you type in the address bar, the text you type (and your language) is sent to the search engine you chose, so it can suggest searches. Only that text goes: no page address, no cookies, nothing from private tabs. You can turn this off in Settings → Search suggestions. The search engine handles it under its own privacy policy. We receive nothing.
  • Page translation – pages are translated on your device with Google's ML Kit; the text of the page never leaves the device. The first time a language is used, its translation model (about 30 MB) is downloaded from Google. ML Kit also sends Google technical data about its own use – device model and Android version, app version, a per-installation identifier that does not identify you, performance and error data, and the languages translated – under Google's privacy policy. We receive nothing.

Websites and third-party lists

Websites you visit, and the filter list authors listed above, are third parties governed by their own privacy policies. We do not control them.

Children

The app is not directed at children under 13 and gives unrestricted access to the internet.

Security

All data stays on your device under Android's app sandbox. Connections to search engines, filter list hosts and the scriptlet library use HTTPS. Filter lists are only loaded over HTTPS.

Changes

We may update this policy. The new version will be posted at this address with a new effective date.
